All in a day!
It was one of those spring Sundays that started with a gray, cloudy morning, where the mist slowly dissipated and gave way to the warming sun. A Chumash elder was telling stories at the cultural center and earth seemed to come alive. Flowers that had closed up would unfold their beauty and add their color sprinkles to the already lush green. Stories from the past would bring a smile on many faces, young and old.
All of a sudden the sky would fill with dark clouds and the fire sirens would sound. A neighbor's house had caught on fire. The wooden shingles were just food for this powerful force. The firemen did their best to save was there to save, which was not much. Within minutes this home was turned into a smoldering skeleton. Many possessions were turned into ash this afternoon. Luckily nobody was physically hurt in this incident.
What is left, when you loose all of your possessions? What is important then? What is important now?

A new cult: Liebesschlösser
What has become one of the most romantic places in Germany? An old chapel, a cozy cafe, or maybe a glitzy bar? Far from it, a steel bridge in the heart of Cologne. Until 2008 the Hohenzollern bridge was just another bridge across the Rhine, used by trains, bicyclists and pedestrians. It all started in the summer of 2008 when a couple tied a padlock to the metal fence, throwing the key to it into the cold waters of the Rhine river. Since the number of so called "Liebesschlösser" has grown to the tens of thousands, almost completely covering the venerable fence. Tourists now come to see this attraction and it is not uncommon to find wedding parties engaging in this new tradition. Hurry up, space is limited... and the padlock industry loves your business!

Radfieber

Schliesslich will ich ja vom Nonnenwald etwas sehen.
Gott sei Dank ging alles gut. 150km in knapp 7 Stunden.

heaven on earth...

Once upon a time there was a young boy, who lived with his family in a gigantic apartment complex, where no pets were allowed. The lonely boy invented a small dog and started to write about his beloved pet every night before going to bed, instead of walking a real doggy. Soon, the journal was full with great adventures. Nobody in the family ever learned about the exciting travels and the fantastic experiences of the two companions. The journal fell into oblivion and was discarded. The young boy grew into a wise man, who did not have many possessions, but a rich fantasy.

Finally: Arrival in Santiago de Compostela...
That was it!
A display of joy, achievement...
Not the kind of quiet joy, pain and doubt that was present during the last weeks.
The city is loud, hectic and crowded, too much to handle right away...
Exhausted and hungry, not really thrilled about the outlook that this was it. Antonio takes off the next day by plane to Sevilla. We eat, say good bye and I set off to Negreira, a long day:
Pedronzo - Santiago - Negreira.
I find a modern hostal, just opened a few weeks ago. The showers are phenomenal. After leaving Santiago, I was alone on the trail, finishing in peace.
After returning from Muxia, I gave Santiago a second look. I was not the only one who was reflective.

News from the Camino Primitivo
Finally, sunshine! Crossed the mountains from Oviedo, Escamplero, Bodenaya, Borres, Berducedo, into Grandas des Salimas. Most hamlets may not show up on Google Map. Farm houses, a bar, and an auberge, that´s mostly it. The trail was mostly under water, but after the first step into a deep puddle, what´s there to loose. Looks like there are 10 to 20 pilgrims on their way between stages, although some seem to walk only in good weather. Met one guy who said there are 600 pilgrims on the Camino Frances, no complaints.
Made it into the Spanish Newspaper, well more as the background for a special auberge in Bodenaya.
Less than 200 km to Santiago, the excitement is building...

News from El Camino del Norte
Well, this is a different camino! I have been walking by myself most of the time, was the only guest in some of the auberges, walked in snow, rain, and on the beach!
It is quite comforting to walk without being rushed. The North Coast is amazing. The mountains come very close to the sea. It goes up and down. And it is VERY GREEN here. I guess that´s what rain does.
I am now on the Camino Primitivo, just outside Oviedo. There is some hill climbing ahead!

Training for the Camino
If all goes well, I may be on my way to Santiago de Compostela in about a week.
Will the skies over Europe be clear? Will it rain?
Will I find my way?
Will it be crowded, since it is a Holy Year?

Pearly...
Provided wood is treated the right way, it can weather many storms. This images was taken at the San Miguel mission near Paso Robles after a good early winter storm in December 2009. For the gizmo-heads, the picture was taken with an iPhone, pretty decent, right?
Not sure how I feel today, wishing stuff would pearl off like raindrops, maybe?

... and here comes the English version!
Inside this book you will find on 40 pages impressions from the Camino de Santiago, an ancient path, which attracts hundreds of thousands pilgrims every year. The author captures the spirit of the Camino in 99 images.
Hiking over 500 miles from the Pyrenées to Santiago de Compostela was not only a physically demanding, but also a spiritually rewarding experience. Everybody's journey on this trail will be different, but we also will bring back some similar memories of the endless meseta, the unselfish hospitaleros, and not the least our tired legs...
Enjoy.

It's the Christmas season after all!
Blurb did a great job, it looks really good, if I may say so.
The English version will be available in a matter of days.
Viel Spass.

Race faces
Got up at 4AM, to shoot some triathletes in their element at the Nautica Malibu Triathlon 2009. Terri Hatcher was the most photographed participant at this event, I assume, judging by the paparazzi cloud around her, but there were more notable faces.Funny

Solitude

While biking around the Four Corners area I brought some light and not so light reading material with me. One of the books was "Solitude - Seeking Wisdom in Extremes" by Robert Kull and I let you decide in which category of reading material this may fall. In any case, the author, no stranger to hardship in life, decided to go for a Ph.D. at age 40 and chose to spend a year on some remote island in the Patagonia wilderness, without human contact, besides a monthly email, to study the effects of solitude on his body and soul.
After a month of bicycle riding on and off the Continental divide and another month relaxing at home I am positive that solitude can be experienced even in presence of other humans, but I must admit, a year in Patagonia makes for better book sales.
Robert's thesis is available for download here.
